Meal kits vs prepared meals: which one fits how you actually cook
Kits hand you ingredients and a recipe; prepared meals arrive cooked and need two minutes of heat. The right choice comes down to time, effort, and what you are willing to pay per plate.
Choose a meal kit if you enjoy cooking and want to skip planning and shopping; choose prepared meals if you want food on the table in a few minutes with no cleanup. Published prices as of September 2026 overlap: Home Chef kits average $9.99 per serving, Tovala starts at $8.99, and CookUnity's regular listed price is $12.59 per meal.

Start with the question that decides it
Ask yourself one thing: on a typical Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., do you want to cook or do you want to eat? If you enjoy cooking but hate planning and shopping, a kit solves your problem. If you don’t want to cook at all, a kit adds a chore and a prepared meal removes it.
Everything below is drawn from what each company publishes as of September 2026. We did not order or cook any of it.

| Skills gained | Yes | No | No |
Meal kits
HelloFresh says recipes take about 30 minutes and offers 100+ weekly menu and market items, with a Quick & Easy menu for 20 minutes or less. Home Chef advertises over 35 meals a week and average pricing of $9.99 per serving. Kits give you real cooking, portion control by design, and the leftover ingredients are your problem only in the sense that they are already measured.
Prepared meals
Factor says meals arrive fresh, never frozen, stay good in the fridge for up to 7 days after delivery, and heat in 2-3 minutes in a microwave or oven. It advertises 100+ rotating weekly meals and diet filters that include GLP-1 focused, high-protein, Mediterranean, vegetarian, and low-carb. CookUnity says it has over 400 rotating meals from more than 100 chefs, plans of 4 to 16 meals a week, and meals ready in 2 minutes. Its homepage shows $6.30 per meal as a promotion against a regular $12.59. Our reviews of Factor and CookUnity go further, and Factor vs CookUnity compares the two.
The hybrid
Tovala is neither pure kit nor pure ready meal. You scan a barcode and the smart oven cooks a mostly assembled meal. Two-serving packs start at $8.99 per serving, shipping is $10.99, and the oven is $69 on promotion (regularly $299) when you order six times in six months. See the Tovala review.
Cost: the gap is smaller than it looks
Per-serving figures overlap. Home Chef averages $9.99, Tovala starts at $8.99 for two-packs, and CookUnity’s regular listed price is $12.59 per meal. What separates the formats is the surrounding cost:
- Shipping. Factor says a shipping fee applies to all deliveries, Tovala charges $10.99 flat, and HelloFresh and Home Chef say shipping applies after the first box. Shipping is fixed per box, so a bigger order lowers the per-meal share.
- Your groceries. A kit replaces some grocery spending; a prepared meal replaces takeout more often than groceries.
- Waste. Kits are pre-portioned, which cuts waste. Prepared meals can be wasted if you overorder for a week you’re away.
Our cost-per-meal guide shows how to compute a true per-plate figure.
Flexibility and commitment
All of these are weekly services, so the risk is the same: a box you forgot to skip. HelloFresh cuts off changes at 11:59 PM PST five days before delivery. Factor says you can modify, skip, pause, or cancel without penalties, and CookUnity and Tovala say much the same. See how to cancel or skip for a checklist.
Nutrition
A prepared meal is one fixed dish, so its published numbers are easier to fit into a plan, while a kit’s per-serving panel assumes you followed the recipe as written, including any oil or butter you add. Either way, a published number is an estimate; our calorie accuracy guide explains why. This is general information, not medical advice; talk with a qualified professional if you are managing a health condition.
Household scenarios
A couple that likes cooking together. Kits add structure to something you already enjoy. HelloFresh’s 100+ weekly options give you room to rotate, and Home Chef’s mix of kits and oven-ready meals lets you dial effort up or down.
One person with a demanding job. Prepared meals fit better. Factor says meals last up to 7 days in the fridge after delivery, and CookUnity offers plans of 4 to 16 meals a week, so you can size the order to the number of dinners you would otherwise skip.
A family with different tastes. Kits let each person add or omit toppings and sauces. Home Chef’s Family Plan is sold in four-serving increments, while Tovala sells four-serving family meals from $35.96.
Someone tracking macros. A prepared meal gives you a fixed dish and a published panel, which is easier to log than a recipe that changes with your cooking. Kits work too if you follow the recipe as written.
Someone who hates dishes. Prepared meals win. Kits still leave pans, a cutting board, and prep bowls.
Common mistakes with both formats
- Ordering for a week you will not be home. Both formats are weekly; set the skip reminder before the cutoff.
- Comparing promotional prices. CookUnity’s homepage shows $6.30 per meal as an introductory rate against a regular $12.59, and Factor promotes 50% off the first box. Compare regular prices.
- Forgetting shipping. Factor says a shipping fee applies to all deliveries; Tovala’s is $10.99 flat.
- Assuming a diet tag equals a nutrition plan. Tags help you filter; the panel tells you what is in the meal.
What we could not verify
We could not find a per-meal price for Factor on its homepage, and HelloFresh shows prices only after a ZIP code is entered, so we do not quote them. None of this reflects meals we cooked or tasted.
Which to pick
- Cook most nights and want variety: kit.
- Live alone or work late and want zero cooking: prepared meals. See best meal delivery for one person.
- Want a bit of both: Home Chef’s oven-ready options or Tovala.
- Undecided: start with the format that removes your biggest chore, then compare with our best meal kits.
The short test
If you would cook the food on a night when you are tired, choose a kit. If you would order takeout on that night instead, choose prepared meals, because the comparison that matters is with what you would otherwise spend, not with the other format. Price a normal week both ways using the regular, non-promotional prices and shipping, then keep whichever wins after that arithmetic. All figures here are a September 2026 snapshot from company pages, and offers change often.
Questions people ask
- Are meal kits or prepared meals cheaper?
- Neither is reliably cheaper. Home Chef kits average $9.99 per serving and CookUnity lists $12.59 per meal at regular price, but promotions and shipping change the totals. Compare checkout totals for the same number of meals, shipping included.
- Which is faster, a meal kit or a prepared meal?
- Prepared meals are faster. Factor says heating takes 2-3 minutes and CookUnity says about 2 minutes, while HelloFresh and Green Chef kits are designed for roughly 30 minutes of cooking, plus cleanup.
- Do prepared meals stay fresh?
- Factor says its meals arrive fresh, never frozen, and stay good in the fridge up to 7 days after delivery. Shelf life differs by service, so check each one's stated window and plan your week around it.
- Is there something between a kit and a ready meal?
- Yes. Tovala sends mostly assembled meals that its smart oven cooks after you scan a barcode, with about a minute of prep. Home Chef also sells oven-ready and microwave meals alongside its kits.
- Which is better for a specific diet?
- Both formats offer diet filters. Factor lists high-protein, low-carb, Mediterranean, vegetarian, and GLP-1 focused meals; Green Chef and HelloFresh tag low-carb and calorie-smart kits. Use the published nutrition panel, and consult a professional for medical needs.
