Green Chef Review (2026): Organic Meal Kits for Specific Diets

Green Chef is a HelloFresh-owned meal kit built around organic produce and diet-specific menus such as keto, plant-based and gluten-free. Here is what it publishes as of September 2026.

The short answer

Green Chef is the meal kit to consider if you want organic ingredients and a menu organized around a diet: keto, plant-based, gluten-free, high-protein, calorie or carb-smart. Shipping is a flat $7.99 per box, and per-serving prices are shown only as you build a plan, so check your total before confirming.

The short version, by reader

You follow a specific way of eating. Green Chef’s menu is organized by diet, which makes it easier to filter than a general-purpose kit.

You care about organic. The company’s certification claim is the clearest differentiator, and it is stated on the homepage.

You want the lowest price. This is not the cheapest kit, and per-serving prices are not posted on the pages we reviewed. See the cheapest meal delivery services for cost-led options.

You want no cooking. Wrong category. Green Chef is a cook-it-yourself kit.

What Green Chef is

Green Chef sends pre-portioned ingredients and recipes, like other meal kits, but it leads with organic produce and structured dietary plans. HelloFresh acquired it in 2018, and it still operates as a separate brand with its own menu. If you want the broader mainstream option, read our HelloFresh review alongside this one.

As with every review here, we have not cooked or tasted the food. What follows draws on Green Chef’s published menus, help center and terms.

Green Chef’s site lists these categories: Mediterranean, Plant-Based (vegan and vegetarian), Gluten-Free, High Protein, Calorie Smart, Carb Smart, Functional nutrition, and Quick & Easy. The homepage cites 40+ weekly recipes, of which 15+ new ones each week are described as ready in under 25 minutes. The menus page cites 100+ weekly options, which appears to include add-ons and extras, so use the smaller number as the realistic dinner choice.

Customization is a real feature. Green Chef says you can swap proteins, double your veggies, or double your protein by up to 50 grams per serving. That matters for high-protein eaters, because a single default portion often falls short.

What “organic” does and does not mean here

Green Chef calls itself the first CCOF-certified organic meal kit company and says organic produce and responsibly sourced proteins are standard. That is a certification claim about the company’s handling and ingredients. It is not a promise that every item in every box is organic, and it says nothing about the calorie or macro content. If you rely on it for health reasons, read each recipe.

The allergen notice is equally important. Green Chef states meals are prepared in facilities that also process milk, eggs, wheat, soy and nuts. That includes its Gluten-Free category, so people with celiac disease or serious allergies should read the company’s allergen statement and talk to a health professional before ordering.

Diet-specific menus: how far to trust them

The Carb Smart, Calorie Smart and High Protein groupings are handy filters, but they are labels chosen by the company. Before you rely on one for a goal, open the nutrition panel for the recipe and compare it with your target. For low-carb eating in particular, see our roundup of keto and low-carb meal delivery, and for goals tied to weight, our guide to meal delivery for weight loss. Neither is medical advice, and anyone managing diabetes or another condition should check with a qualified professional.

Cost

Green Chef’s help center lists a flat $7.99 shipping and handling fee per box. That is lower than HelloFresh’s $10.99. Per-serving pricing, however, is not printed on the homepage or the plans pages we could view; it appears as you select a plan and enter your details. Green Chef has advertised sizeable introductory offers (at the time of checking, 50% off plus 20% off for two months), which makes the first invoice misleading. Ask for the regular price before you subscribe, and compare it across services using our cost per meal explainer.

Because we could not verify a per-serving figure, this review does not quote one.

Flexibility

Green Chef says there is no long-term commitment. You can skip a week, pause or cancel in your account settings, as long as you act before the weekly cutoff. That is the standard for the category, but the cutoff is where people slip up.

Verdict

Green Chef makes the most sense for someone who wants an organic-focused kit with dietary categories already built in, and who is fine paying for that focus. It is less compelling if price is the deciding factor or if you want variety at the level of a mainstream kit. Confirm your regular per-serving price, the shipping fee and the cutoff at checkout, because all three can change.

Practical checks before ordering

Because the pages do not publish a per-serving price, a short routine will save you from surprises.

  • Build a plan first. Enter your zip code and choose a plan size to see the real per-serving price and total before creating an account.
  • Add shipping. Include the $7.99 box fee when you compare with another kit.
  • Compare with the same box size. A three-dinner box for two people and a two-dinner family box do not have the same delivered cost per plate.
  • Read the recipe, not just the category. Carb Smart and Calorie Smart are groupings; the panel on each recipe tells you the numbers.

What Green Chef is not

Green Chef is not a supervised diet program. It does not prescribe meals for your health situation, and none of its category names replace advice from a qualified professional. It is also not a ready-to-eat service. Every recipe requires cooking, so if your week is short on time, look at prepared-meal options instead.

It is also not the best place to start if you need the widest possible menu. A large general kit offers more variety in cuisine and format, while Green Chef offers a tighter focus on organic sourcing and diet categories.

Where it sits in the category

For readers who want a mainstream comparison, the HelloFresh review covers the parent company’s flagship kit. Green Chef is the more specialized sibling, and the choice between them mostly comes down to whether organic ingredients and diet categories are worth a premium to you.

The bottom line for different budgets

If you are comparing on price alone, remember that organic sourcing and diet-specific menus are the product here, so the delivered cost per plate will usually sit above a mainstream kit. If those features matter to you, the premium may be reasonable. If they do not, you are paying for something you will not use.

A sensible test is to price the same plan size at Green Chef and at one mainstream kit, include each service’s shipping fee, and compare the delivered total per plate. Then look at the recipes on each menu that you would actually cook. Whichever service gives you more dinners you want at an acceptable price is the better fit for you, regardless of category names or certifications.

Remember, too, that promotions end. Decide based on the regular price, and revisit it every few months, since plans and fees can change.
